
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
– Apply behaviour change theories and SBCC principles to nutrition and health programmes and conduct formative research and behavioural assessments to identify barriers and drivers of behaviour.
– Design evidence-based SBCC strategies aligned with World Bank nutrition programmes and develop culturally appropriate communication materials and community engagement plans.
– Integrate SBCC into nutrition-sensitive, health, agriculture, WASH, and social protection interventions.
– Monitor, evaluate, and adapt SBCC programmes using behavioural indicators and learning systems.
– Develop practical action plans for applying the acquired knowledge within NaNA programmes.

Practical Exercise: Each group develops and presents a Behaviour Change Action Plan for implementation within NaNA programmes.
Practical Field Visits
The following are the field visits to be conducted on specific days:-
Day 4: Community Health and Nutrition
• Community Health Unit (CHU) in Nairobi County
• Observe Community Health Promoters (CHPs) conducting household nutrition counselling, growth monitoring, and community mobilization.
Day 6: School Health and WASH
• Visit a primary school implementing School Health and Nutrition programmes with handwashing facilities and menstrual hygiene management.
• Observe school-based SBCC approaches targeting pupils, teachers, and parents.
Day 8: Urban Informal Settlement
• Visit programmes in Kibera or Mathare that integrate nutrition, WASH, maternal and child health, and community engagement.
• Explore how community groups, local leaders, and health volunteers promote behaviour change in resource constrained settings.
Day 9: Media and Communication
• Visit a communications organization or radio station to learn how mass media campaigns are designed, produced, and evaluated for public health messaging.
Final SBCC Project
Throughout the two weeks, participants work in groups to design a World Bank-aligned Nutrition SBCC
Strategy for The Gambia, incorporating:
• Formative research findings
• Priority nutrition behaviours
• Audience segmentation
• Communication channels
• Community engagement approaches
• Monitoring and evaluation framework
• Budget considerations
• Sustainability and scale-up plan
Participants present their strategies on the final day to a review panel for feedback.
